Next week! We will kick off Summer Reading 2026 with an outdoor party at Timbrook Library on Friday, June 5, 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Bring your sunscreen and towels as the library patio will be transformed into a beach filled with sprinklers, a giant sand pit, decorations, and more! Build a make-your-own Summer Reading kit and enjoy games and activities with your family, friends, and neighbors. Face painting by Reign or Shine Designs will be free and open to the public from 3 – 6 p.m. Kona Ice will be available for you to buy a sweet treat. This year’s Summer Reading theme is “Unearth a Story.”

Can’t make it to the Summer Reading Kick-Off Party at Timbrook on June 5? Visit another library to make your own “Unearth a Story” kit and celebrate! While supplies last. Please note that you do not need to have a Summer Reading kit to participate in the program. It’s just a bonus!

Storytime Picnic meets one more time before our Summer Reading Program gets underway. Join us this Thursday, May 28, at the Timbrook Park Pavilion between the library and baseball fields. We will read the selected book on and off throughout the event, do a themed craft, and play yard games. Bring a snack (optional) and swing by anytime between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. For children ages 0 – 5 and their families.

Be ready for dino-sized fun! Meet some wild dino characters in interactive storytime shows. These will include silly book readings, costumes, songs, and laugh-out-loud fun! The after-show exploration stations may include crafts, science experiments, LEGOs, and more. Come to one or more shows across all four libraries. You are also welcome to come only for the exploration stations if that is more your jam. Geared for ages 3 – 10 years. No registration is required.
 
Our first show will be on Tuesday, June 9 at our Altavista location. The Storytime Show will be 2 – 2:30 p.m., and the After-Show will be 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. For a schedule of all of our locations, click on the button below.

Meet us at the Staunton River Memorial Library in Altavista on Tuesday, June 9, 4 – 5 p.m., and help us help the planet! We have adopted the street in front of the library, which means that we will help keep it litter free. Once every season, we invite you to our Adopt-A-Street day! We have everything you will need: bags, gloves, vests, and grabbers.
 
This is an outdoor event and will be weather permitting. All ages are welcome, and a guardian must be present for ages 17 and under.

Our next Enchanted Trail will be Friday, June 12, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. A small trail in the woods behind Timbrook Library is transformed with decorations and a story, and families are given a scavenger hunt to enjoy as they walk the trail and read the story together. For pre-K and elementary school ages and their families.
 
Be sure to dress appropriately to be outside for about half an hour, and sensible shoes are a must. Note this is a completely outdoor event, and the trail is not stroller friendly.

Bring a friend and leave your talent at the door! Spend an hour making bad art, then browse the gallery of everyone’s pieces. If you make something terrible enough, you might even win the Best Bad Art Award!
 
This free event for adults will be at our Altavista location on Friday, June 12, 6 – 8 p.m. All supplies and light snacks will be provided. Registration through CivicRec is required.
